Go, Jump in the Lake! 2009>
Once again, we arrived at
beautiful Spring Lake Park
before the dawn to prepare
for
the Second Annual
Go, Jump in the Lake!
5K and 1.5 Mile Fun
Run/Walk
, held
September 5, 2009 in
Boiling Spring Lakes, NC!
 An improvement over last
Sixty-two runners of all shapes and sizes (not to mention ages; our
youngest 5K-er,
Jack Kiernan, was a mere 11 years old...and did
we mention that he ran this race with his grandmother,
Judy?)
gathered at the 5K starting line, and were off like the proverbial shot
just moments after 8am.  Despite an early pull for the lead by
several ambitious racers, it was
Kurt Yockel of Oak Island, making
good on his promise to "win it this year!!" who crossed the finish
line first, a mere 18 minutes and 56 seconds after starting out.  Close
on his heels were
Mike Cox of Wrightsville Beach and Steve
Epperson
of Augusta, Georgia.
year's event, however...MUCH cooler weather greeted our runners
and walkers, not that the temperature drop stopped some of them
from
JUMPING IN THE LAKE! (can you tell that's our favorite
part of this race??)
For complete race results, please see below.

The 1.5 Mile Fun Run/Walk was just that - FUN!  We had 23 runners
and walkers set out around the lake, not to mention a slew of little
ones in strollers and wagons.  For some, like overall winner
Michael Fields of Winnabow, the fun run was a chance to push
himself to go as fast as he could....while for others (like yours truly!)
it was a great opportunity to go for a brisk walk with good friends,
and enjoy the day and the feeling of well-being and accomplishment.
Congratulations to all who completed the fun run, especially the rest
of the top placers:
Josh Epperson of Augusta, Georgia, Agnes Dail
of Burgaw, NC, Mary Grace Kiernan of Wilmington, and Roman
Dilgard
and his mom, Cherie, of Boiling Spring Lakes.  For
complete race results, please see below.
Just about a minute after
Yockel finished,
Suzanne
Tulsey,
also of Oak Island,
took top honors in the 5K for
the women.  She was
followed by
Cherie Dilgard
of Boiling Spring Lakes and
Cami Soliday of Leland.
