January 2010 THIRD THURSDAY: Soup Swap III
|
On January 21, 2010, we gathered once again at the Erickson's house
in Boiling Spring Lakes, for our annual Soup Swap! We were
pleased to welcome some new swappers, and initiate them in the
time-honored traditions of
soup-telling, trash-talking,
ante-upping and, of course, soup
swapping!
In addition to our usual awards for
"First Picked" (MaryAnne Gilland's
Smoky Portobello) and "Frequently
Picked" (Jen Iapalucci's Irish Onion Soup), our hostess, Elie
Erickson, initiated a few new prizes this year, including "Most
Garlic" (the winner received a box of breath mints!) and "Most
Ingredients" (a magnetic shopping list pad), and the swappers were
immediately filled with the (good-natured) competitive spirit! Props
to Jon Richmond for trying to win a prize on his wife's behalf by
claiming her pesto-flavored soup contained "about a hundred" cloves
of garlic, but we're pretty sure Kyle Ohlund's soup was the rightful
winner in that category. Newcomer Marsha Kitter easily took home
the prize for the most ingredients with her southwestern soup, the
recipe for which is a result of years of tweaking and tinkering.
After the telling, it was time to get down to swapping! Each soup
maker drew a number and chose soups one at a time, in order........
All in all, we had ten different soups, and I know more than one person
went home wishing they'd been able to grab a quart of each one!
If you missed out, and want a chance to try these soups for yourself, see
below for the recipes!
Thanks, Elie, for hosting a great event!
***NOTE: Although the soup-makers diligently supplied me with their recipes, in the aftermath of the birth of my second child, I have MISPLACED my copies. I have asked each chef to resend their recipe, which I know they will graciously do at their earliest convenience. I will share them here as soon as possible!!***
