Where We Live
building better communities
September 2009 THIRD THURSDAY:
Wine Tasting
This month's Third Thursday was a repeat of a highly enjoyable past
event, the blind Wine Tasting!  Last year, we had a great presentation
by our hostess about the history of wine making prior to the tasting;
you can check it out here.  This year,
we dispensed with the education and
got right down to the tasting! (Or at
least most of us did.  Some of us
were, ahem, mere spectators this
go-around, but we're looking forward
to next time!)
We distributed journals to make
notes in, and tips on how to assess
the various qualities of the wines,
including clarity, color, sniff, flavor,
complexity, and, most importantly,
whether or not we liked it!  To
download the information pages
from our journals,

Crystal and Joe Ivy compare
notes (above, l), while
Elie
Erickson
and Tom
Zimmerman
(below, l) don't
want to be distracted from the
business at hand.
Adrian
Iapalucci
(r) demonstrates his
impressive "sniff" technique.
When the tasting was through, all the cheese was eaten and all the
notes were made, we revealed each bottle so that everyone could
note the names of the ones they enjoyed (and the ones they didn't, for
that matter!)
(L-R) Joe looks like he wants another taste of R6; Elie and Mark Deese have a
friendly competition going over who can name the most varietals correctly;
Scott
Gilland
wonders where the beer is while his wife MaryAnne diligently makes notes
in her wine journal.
So here's how we did it.  Everyone was asked to bring their favorite
under-$10 bottle of wine, which we swiftly disguised in brown
paper bags, identified with a letter ("W" for white, "R" for red, and
"P" for pink) and a number.
Elie Erickson took home the prize
for correctly guessing the most
varietals, but everyone left with the
name of a new, affordable wine or
two to add to their shopping lists!

Cheers to all who participated!

let the tasting begin!
