JULY 2009 THIRD THURSDAY: The Return of the BBQ Battle!
|
Last year I made an effort to educate you about the history of barbecue,
and the different regional interpretations of this highly prized and hotly
debated cooking method. This year, I'm cutting right to the chase....and
talking about THE FOOD.
Hosted once again by Joan and
Richard Lombardi, BBQ battlers
gathered around the pool on a
drizzly evening to eat, drink and be
merry (and talk trash about each
others' barbecue!) For a buffet that
included just "one" type of food, we
had such an AMAZING array of
treats to choose from! Slow-cooked
beef brisket, swimming in its own
pork, creative salads....it was hard to
find room on my plate (let alone in my
stomach!) for all of the entries. But trust
me, I persevered......
After everyone had a chance to sample
the goods, our hostess secretly polled the

juices, roasted corn-on-the-cob wrapped
in BACON, grilled chicken and veggie
kebabs with a seasoning blend so
elusive I had to keep tasting it, just
trying to figure out what was in it!
Sweet-and-savory meatballs, miniature
fried chicken sandwiches with a
perfectly placed pickle slice, tender
crowd to determine this year's favorite,
and boy was it a close race!! Last
year's champion Frank Lombardi
came this close to retaining the titles
with his delectable kebabs, but in the
end, Betty Duffy took top honors with
her amazing grilled chicken topped with
mango salsa. YUM!! Congrats, Betty,
we can't wait to see what you cook up
next year (you too, Frank!)
Amidst much finger-licking and
over-stuffed belly rubbing, the evening
wound to a close, but not before the
weather broke to reveal a rainbow and a
glorious sunset over the lake. A perfect
ending to a great event.
If you missed this year's battle, we hope
you'll fire up the grill (or slow-cooker) and join us next year!
Thanks so much to our gracious hosts, and to everyone who joined in the
fun.
Hope to see you all next month!
