Where We Live
building better communities
February 2009 THIRD THURSDAY:
Scrapbooking
On February 19, 2009 we gathered at The Scrapbook Addict for one
of our favorite kinds of Third Thursdays - the kind when one of our
friends shares their talents and passion with us!
Tonya Ohlund is.  A.  Serious.
Scrapper.  She is dedicated to
artistically archiving her memories
in a way that others can only aspire
to, and we mean that in all
seriousness!!  Her family is lucky
that they have volumes upon volumes
of beautifully preserved photos and keepsakes to cherish, while many
of us are lucky just to remember the camera in the first place.
Scrapping - The Basics
Walking into a shop like The Scrapbook Addict in Shallotte (who
graciously opened their doors and shared their enthusiasm with us!)
can be overwhelming to the uninitiated scrapper.  Where to start??
Where to look??  Brads, eyelets, embellishments....papers, pens,
fancy scissors....a hundred different types and methods of
adhesive....it's easy to understand why so many of us might find the
process daunting.  Wandering around the store, your mind starts to
whirl with possibilities, which can actually make it really hard to get
focused and get started on just one page!  Tonya made it so easy for
us though, by breaking the whole process down and providing us
with some easy steps for beginners.
First up,
a basic supply list. Tonya
assured us that we could produce
wonderful scrapbook pages with just
a few, readily available tools.  Next,
she gave us an
easy template to
follow, and walked us through
choosing and cropping photos,
selecting and coordinating papers,
colors, and other embellishments....
and then let us loose on our own
projects!
Tonya lays out some photos, and
shows how she coordinates her paper
colors and patterns to elements in the
photographs.
Katie Deese uses a simple square
template to select the perfect size for
cropping her photos.  A standard
scrapbook page is 12" by 12", so a
template like this can help you
determine how many photos in each
dimension you can fit on the page,
before you irreversibly cut them!
Scrapping - The Process
Despite some initial nervousness, we all got started on our pages....
and the more we worked on them, the more excited we got!  Tonya
offered great tips and advice along the way, and "gently" steered us
away from novice mistakes.  By the end of the night, it was easy to see
how scrapping could become a full-blown addiction!
Joyce Robinson uses a cutter to crop
some photos of her adorable
daughter.  A tool like this is
invaluable for making straight, square
cuts in your photos and papers, nearly
impossible to do with just a blade
and ruler (I know - from experience!)
Jen Iapalucci tries out her selected
photos against a variety of
background papers.  Mixing patterned
and solid color papers adds visual
interest to your scrapbook page.
Tonya's tip - the busier your photos,
the more plain your papers should be!
Matting your photos with solid color
against a patterned background makes
your photos stand out!
Jen's finished page, at right.  Okay,
yes, I did have to be told more than
once that it was time to leave.  And
yes, I DID go out the next day and
buy the cloud stickers to add behind
the sand castle.  Like I said...
ADDICTIVE!
Thank you Tonya, for sharing your hobby!

Do you have an interesting hobby that might make a fun Third
Thursday??
Let us know - we'd love to hear about it!
