Where We Live
building better communities
January 2009 THIRD THURSDAY:
Soup Swap
We gathered on January 15, 2009 for our second annual Soup Swap -
and the swappin' was GOOD!  Hosted once again by
Elie Erickson,
we met at her cozy home in Boiling Spring Lakes, each armed with
six (or in some cases, five) quarts (or in one
case, pints) of homemade soup, looking
forward not only to going home with a
delicious variety to see us through the long
winter nights ahead, but also to a fun and
hilarity-filled evening of good-natured
teasing, ribbing, and general trash-talking.
That's right folks, it's soup making as a
competitive sport, and the competition was FIERCE, especially since
there were prizes involved......
The Telling of the Soup
First, everyone had the opportunity to talk about their soup: where they
found the recipe, how it's made, any secret ingredients or serving
suggestions, or general incentives for choosing a particular soup over
another.  We heard about Jen's new favorite soup, discovered while
on a recent vacation.  We heard about Kyle's fondness for squirrels,
and Katie's "this soup is SO not good for you" disclaimer.  We heard
why Crystal packaged up pints instead of quarts of her soup (featuring
hand-made noodles) and had our interest piqued by the still-warm
chocolate chip cookies she offered to "make up for" her smaller
containers.  Elie cleverly tied (pun intended) her soup into a football
theme, and Maureen explained a delicious way to take some of the
heat out of her spicy soup......
Numbers drawn, we started choosing
up soups.  Katie Deese took home the
prizes for First Picked and First
Gone, as her Beer Cheese Bacon
Soup flew off the table.  Couples
strategized ways to get all the soups
they wanted, and while no actual
pushing and shoving took place, there
was more than a little friendly
competition to scoop up as many
different soups as possible.
Maureen Angers once again drew first
pick, and awarded the "Silver Ladle"
to Katie Deese.
Before we knew it, we were bestowing the
dubious honor of "Finally Picked" on Tonya
Ohlund (I tried her chili - it's really good!)
and staggering home to load our freezers with
enough soup to last us the winter (or,
alternatively, six days of solid soup eating).
And when I say staggering, I really mean
it....thanks to Crystal for contributing the
photo of her soups on the scale (Crystal may
need to get out more....)

If you couldn't make it, and want to try out the
soups of Soup Swap 2009, check out the
recipes below!!!

Thanks Elie, for another great swap!  We're
looking forward to next year.
