MAKE YOUR OWN LIP BALM

Presented February 21, 2008 by Sherry Stocks

Ingredients

1 oz. beeswax

4 oz. safflower oil

Approximately 1 tsp. essential or flavored oil of your choice, unsweetened

Do NOT use fragrance oils in lip balm!

Equipment

1 canning jar (jelly jar or pint size)

Wooden stir stick (chopstick works well)

Jar remover (like one used in canning) or oven mitt

Sauce pan or pot

Pipette

Lip balm containers

Instructions

Wash block of beeswax with soap and cold water.  Rinse well, and shake off excess water (do not dry with a towel!)  This will remove any dust or residue from the packaging.

Place wax in canning jar, and place the jar in the sauce pan.  Fill the pan with a small amount of water (not so much that the jar floats) and heat over medium heat.  Try not to let the water boil; 140 degrees will be sufficient to melt the wax.

Once the wax begins melting, add the safflower oil and stir frequently until contents are blended and completely melted.

Carefully remove jar from water, and allow to cool until you are able to handle the jar in your bare hands.  Add the essential oil, and stir well.

Using the pipette, transfer the liquid lip balm to your preferred storage containers.  Allow to cool completely before capping the storage containers.  Reheat the contents of the jar as necessary.  Any leftover mixture can be stored and reheated for use later!
